There Is a Case for Eating More Slowly. You Can Skip the Stopwatch.
Eating more slowly can change how much we eat at a meal, but the familiar rules about 20 chews and 20-minute dinners make the advice sound far more precise than the research is. The useful part is simpler: take smaller bites, give them a little more time, and stop treating lunch like a qualifying lap.

I know I have eaten too quickly when I look down and discover that dinner has somehow disappeared before the conversation has properly started.
There was no intention to rush. Nobody fired a starting pistol. Yet somewhere between the first forkful and the second sip of water, eating quietly turned into a logistical operation: fork, chew, swallow, reload. If somebody asked what the food tasted like, I could probably identify the main ingredient and offer little further testimony.
Eating quickly is common enough that slowing down has become one of those pieces of health advice repeated with enormous confidence. Chew every mouthful 20 or 30 times. Make dinner last exactly 20 minutes. Put the fork down for 20 seconds between bites. Depending on which corner of the internet you visit, there may eventually be enough numbers involved to require a spreadsheet.
The research gives us a more interesting—and considerably less fussy—answer.
Slower Eating Can Change How Much You Eat
A major systematic review and meta-analysis looked at 22 experiments in which researchers deliberately changed how quickly people ate. Across the studies, slower eating was associated with lower energy intake during the meal, although there was considerable variation between experiments. Interestingly, the researchers did not find a clear effect on reported hunger immediately after eating or during the following few hours.
That distinction matters. It is tempting to tell a beautifully simple story in which eating slowly gives your brain enough time to receive a magical “I’m full” message and everything falls neatly into place. Human appetite appears to be rather less tidy.
Eating rate affects a collection of things at once: how large our bites are, how long food spends in the mouth, how rapidly energy reaches us and how much food can be consumed during a given period. A separate meta-analysis examining oral processing found that behaviours related to more chewing and slower processing were associated with reduced food intake, while effects on subjective appetite were smaller.
In other words, the plate may change even when your internal hunger meter does not perform a dramatic revelation.
The Bite May Matter as Much as the Clock
One of the more useful things researchers have discovered is that fast eaters tend to do more than simply finish sooner.
They also tend to take larger bites.
In laboratory observations across several meals, people showed surprisingly consistent personal eating rates, and faster eaters tended to take larger bites and consume more energy. Their pace at one meal also predicted how quickly they ate at later meals.
Experiments manipulating bite size make the same point from another direction. In one study, participants consumed substantially more of a semisolid food when bites were larger and oral processing time was shorter. A 2024 randomized crossover experiment with pretzels similarly found that larger pieces encouraged larger bites and faster eating, which in turn helped explain differences in how much people ate.
That suggests a more useful strategy than staring nervously at the kitchen clock.
Make the mouthful smaller.
You do not need to cut a sandwich into molecules. Just notice whether your fork is repeatedly arriving with enough food aboard to require planning permission.
There Is No Magic 20-Minute Dinner
This is the part of the old advice I would happily retire.
There is no universal point at 20 minutes when the body rings a bell and declares the meal complete. Research on eating speed has used many different foods, meal lengths, bite sizes and pacing techniques; it does not establish a single ideal duration that every dinner should reach. The 2014 meta-analysis found an overall effect of slower eating despite substantial differences in how the experiments slowed people down.
The same goes for the instruction to chew every bite exactly 20 or 30 times. More oral processing can influence intake, but a fixed chewing quota is not a physiological law. Different foods require wildly different amounts of chewing, which becomes fairly obvious if you compare a spoonful of yoghurt with a piece of roast chicken.
Counting every chew also introduces a new problem: your meal starts feeling like administrative work.
If counting temporarily helps you discover how quickly you normally eat, fine. I just wouldn’t spend the rest of my life silently reaching 17, 18, 19 while everyone else at the table wonders where I went.
And the 80/20 Rule Has Wandered Into the Wrong Article
The original version of this piece included the 80/20 rule and 90/10 rule, but neither is really about eating slowly.
Those terms are commonly used as flexible-diet heuristics: eat nutrient-dense foods most of the time while leaving some room for less nutritious favourites. Variations appear in dietetic advice and health literature, but they are not established mechanisms for controlling eating speed.
They may be useful ideas in another conversation. They simply don’t tell you how quickly to eat your lasagne.
The same is true of the so-called 20/20/20 rule. Versions of it exist in specialised clinical settings—for example, bariatric programmes may use structured eating instructions after particular procedures—but that does not make it a universal protocol for everyone eating dinner at home.
For most of us, the stopwatch can stay in the drawer.
The Best Way to Slow Down Is to Change What Happens Between Bites
If I wanted to slow my own eating without making the meal unbearably self-conscious, I would start with mechanics rather than mindfulness.
Take a slightly smaller bite. Chew until the food is comfortably ready to swallow rather than rushing it down to clear the runway for the next forkful. Allow the utensil to return to the plate occasionally instead of keeping it permanently loaded. If you realise that your next bite is already waiting while you are still chewing the previous one, that is useful information.
Food texture can help too. Research increasingly suggests that foods requiring more oral processing tend to be eaten more slowly. Most strikingly, a randomized crossover trial published in 2026 gave 41 adults two different ultra-processed diets for 14 days each. The diets were matched on several characteristics but designed to promote slower or faster eating through texture. Participants consumed an average of 369 fewer calories per day on the slower-eating diet, although the experiment was short and did not show a difference in body weight between diets.
That is a fascinating result, but I would not turn it into another commandment. It tells us that the physical characteristics of food can influence eating pace and intake, not that every meal should consist of foods requiring industrial quantities of mastication.
Sometimes soup is dinner.
Slower Does Not Automatically Mean Healthier
This is where the subject needs some restraint.
Observational research has repeatedly found associations between faster self-reported eating and higher BMI or measures of obesity. A 2021 systematic review found that faster eating was associated with higher BMI and waist circumference across much of the literature. But association is not the same thing as proving that speed caused the difference, and researchers themselves note that eating speed is difficult to measure consistently.
Even experimental studies do not produce identical results. In one randomized crossover trial, slower eating reduced meal energy intake among normal-weight participants but did not produce a statistically significant reduction among participants with overweight or obesity.
So I would be suspicious of promises that eating slowly will automatically cause weight loss, cure indigestion or regulate every appetite hormone in perfect harmony.
It is a behaviour worth experimenting with, not a treatment plan disguised as table manners.
Some People May Not Need to Eat Less
There is another reason not to universalize the advice.
For an older adult who is frail, losing weight unintentionally or struggling to consume enough energy, reducing intake may be precisely the wrong goal. A 2025 study in healthy adults over 65 found that faster eating was associated with greater energy intake, and the researchers explicitly noted that understanding these behaviours could also help when clinicians are trying to increase intake in vulnerable older adults.
The same common sense applies to anyone dealing with an eating disorder, swallowing difficulties, significant unintentional weight loss or a medical condition affecting food intake. Generic advice to “eat less by eating slowly” is not an appropriate substitute for individualized care.
For everyone else, the proposition can remain pleasantly modest: if your meals routinely vanish before you’ve had much chance to experience them, try slowing the mechanics down and see what happens.
What I Wish I’d Known Earlier: I don’t need to chew every bite 30 times, make dinner last exactly 20 minutes or earn a certificate in mindful mastication. I just need to notice when I’m eating so quickly that the next bite is arriving before the previous one has had a fair hearing.
Try This at One Meal, Not Every Meal Forever
At your next reasonably unhurried meal, don’t time yourself.
Take bites that are a little smaller than usual. Let yourself finish chewing before preparing the next one. Put the fork down a few times because you genuinely don’t need to be holding it continuously. Halfway through, notice how much food remains and whether your pace has changed.
That is enough for an experiment.
If you eat less and feel equally satisfied, interesting. If you enjoy the meal more, also interesting. If nothing changes except that dinner lasts six minutes longer, you have still learned something about yourself without adopting a new religion.
And that is where I would stop this article, because eating slowly and eating mindfully are not quite the same subject. Pace is largely about the mechanics of how food moves from plate to mouth. Mindful eating asks a different set of questions about attention, distraction, hunger, emotion and how present we are while eating.
That deserves its own conversation.
Eating more slowly does not require a stopwatch, a mandatory number of chews or a collection of numerical diet rules. The evidence is strongest for a simpler idea: eating rate can influence how much food we consume, and smaller bites and more oral processing can slow that rate.
If you tend to finish before everyone else has settled into the meal, give your food a little more time. You may eat less, you may enjoy it more, and at the very least you will remember what dinner tasted like.
