White Vinegar Is a Useful Cleaner. It Is Not an All-Purpose Cleaner.
A bottle of white vinegar costs very little, lasts for ages and can be surprisingly useful around the house. But it is not a disinfectant for every occasion, it does not belong on every surface, and mixing it with whatever else happens to be under the sink can turn a simple cleaning job into a chemistry experiment you did not ask for.

- White vinegar is most useful where its acidity can help with mineral deposits and hard-water scale and mineral deposits on acid-safe surfaces.
- For ordinary cleaning, mild soap or detergent and water are often all you need; cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing.
- Never mix vinegar with bleach or other household cleaners, and keep it away from marble, limestone, travertine and other acid-sensitive surfaces.
I keep white vinegar in the house.
I also keep a screwdriver in the house.
Neither one is an all-purpose tool.
That is where a lot of homemade-cleaner advice goes wrong. Vinegar is cheap, familiar and acidic, so it gets promoted as the answer to everything from cloudy shower glass to kitchen grease, floors, toilets and supposedly “disinfecting” the entire house.
It can be very useful.
It can also dull a stone countertop surprisingly quickly.
What Vinegar Is Actually Good At
The useful thing about vinegar is not that it is “natural.” It is that it contains acetic acid.
That acidity can help loosen mineral deposits—the chalky white residue left behind when hard water repeatedly dries on a compatible surface. This is why vinegar can be handy around certain taps, shower fittings and glass.
I am much more likely to reach for it when I see mineral scale than when I see an ordinary greasy fingerprint.
And I would still check the manufacturer’s care instructions first. Chrome plating, specialty coatings, sealants and decorative finishes do not all respond to acids in the same way.
That distinction is important:
Use vinegar because the job calls for an acid, not because every cleaning article on the internet seems to own a bottle.
Sometimes Soap and Water Is the Better DIY Cleaner
For an everyday kitchen spill, dusty shelf or mildly dirty washable surface, I would start somewhere considerably less exciting.
Soap or detergent and water.
EPA guidance specifically recommends reducing unnecessary use of household chemicals and suggests less-toxic cleaning methods such as mild soap and water.
That is not much of a viral cleaning hack.
It is, however, an excellent cleaning method.
Cleaning works by removing dirt and contaminants from a surface. You do not necessarily need to kill every microorganism on the kitchen table because someone ate toast there.
EPA also notes that many ordinary cleaning jobs—walls, floors and other surfaces with relatively little hand contact—do not routinely require disinfectants.
What I Wish I’d Known Earlier: the most useful homemade cleaning routine is often not finding a clever recipe. It is learning when plain detergent and water are enough.
Cleaning and Disinfecting Are Different Jobs
This is where I would retire one of the biggest claims from the old article.
I would not call household vinegar a disinfectant.
In the United States, products making disinfecting claims are regulated by EPA and must meet specific effectiveness requirements. The agency distinguishes cleaning—physically removing dirt and contaminants—from disinfecting, which means using a tested product to inactivate microorganisms.
That does not mean your home needs constant disinfection.
It means that when you genuinely do need to disinfect a surface, use a product intended for that job and follow its label, including the required contact time.
Spraying something and immediately wiping it away is not automatically disinfecting.
Where I Would Never Reach for Vinegar
Natural stone is the big one.
The Natural Stone Institute recommends neutral cleaners, stone soap or mild dish detergent for stone surfaces and specifically warns that vinegar, lemon and other acids can dull or etch calcareous stones.
That includes:
- marble
- limestone
- travertine
Granite can be more acid-resistant, but even there the Institute cautions that some minerals, sealers and impregnators can be affected by acidic solutions.
So I would not spray a homemade vinegar cleaner indiscriminately across a kitchen simply because the bottle says “natural.”
If you are unsure what your countertop, tile or floor is made from, identify the material first.
The cost of the correct cleaner is considerably less irritating than the cost of repolishing stone.
And Please Stop Mixing Everything Together
The internet loves vinegar and baking soda because they fizz.
The fizz is real.
The magic is less convincing.
Vinegar is acidic; baking soda is a base. When they meet, they react and produce carbon dioxide—the bubbles you can see—along with water and sodium acetate. The American Chemical Society uses this exact reaction as a basic chemistry demonstration.
The bubbling itself can sometimes provide useful agitation, but combining an acid and a base is not evidence that you have created a more powerful universal cleaner.
I would rather use each material for a job where its individual properties make sense.
Never mix vinegar with bleach, and do not mix household cleaning chemicals unless the product instructions specifically tell you to.
CDC says household bleach should never be mixed with other cleaners or disinfectants because dangerous vapours can be released. EPA’s guidance is broader still: do not mix cleaning chemicals unless the product instructions specifically tell you to.
That includes vinegar and bleach.
There is no cleaning problem in my house important enough to justify making toxic gas over it.
I Would Skip the Citrus-Peel Infusion Too
The original version of this article had us soaking rosemary and citrus peels in vinegar to create a scented cleaner.
It looks attractive in a glass jar.
It may change the scent, but I would not assume it makes the vinegar a more effective cleaner.
If the smell of vinegar bothers you, I would rather ventilate the room, use less of it or choose a commercially formulated product whose ingredients and compatible surfaces are clearly labelled.
EPA’s Safer Choice programme is also useful if your goal is reducing exposure to ingredients of greater concern without having to become your own household chemist.
“Homemade” and “green” are not synonyms.
Neither are “natural” and “harmless.”
The Simple Cleaning Kit I Would Actually Keep
Mine would be remarkably boring:
- A mild detergent for most ordinary washable surfaces.
- White vinegar for selected mineral deposits and acid-safe surfaces.
- Baking soda where a mild abrasive is appropriate—after checking that the finish will not scratch.
- A proper disinfectant for the relatively limited situations where disinfection is genuinely needed.
- And several good microfiber cloths.
That covers an enormous amount of normal household cleaning without turning the cupboard beneath the sink into an apothecary.
White vinegar deserves a place in the cleaning cupboard, but not a crown. Use it where acidity is useful, keep it away from acid-sensitive materials and never confuse everyday cleaning with disinfection. For much of the house, the least glamorous solution is still one of the best: the right amount of mild detergent, some water and a clean cloth.
